Flow Spring 2023 Nature Gallery

Welcome to The Flow® Spring 2023 issue.

Traditionally, we kick off our first issue of the year by celebrating Nature and its depth of beauty and inspiration to artists. The different interpretations of Nature in glass are as varied as Nature itself, and this issue is sure to amaze and delight the reader.

The Gallery features the work of 59 different glass artists and includes flameworked and furnace glass works, kiln-formed sculpture, enamels, mosaic art, mixed media works, jewelry, and functional glass. Imagery featured in the Gallery includes insects, frogs, birds, flowers, butterflies, fish, ocean reefs, elephants, leaves, abstract works, microscopic creatures, bees and honeycomb, fruits, whales, octopi, rabbits, mushrooms, and more.

Crista Van Slyck Matteson shares her love for the Thornton Creek Watershed in her area and discusses the mixed-media multi-component installation she created to honor the watershed.

Soft-glass artist Barbara Svetlick Wilson dips her toes into the world of boro with her ambitious project: constructing all 50 state flowers from glass.

Chicago glassblower Joshua DeWall is known for his brilliant flasks and decanters shaped like animals, and he talks to The Flow about his endless passion for glass as an art material.

Kathy Griffiths takes us into her studio and shows us how to use flameworking techniques to construct an off-mandrel hummingbird and floral branch.

Turkish artist Serbay Doru creates hyperrealistic insects and flowers from glass, and he took the time to talk to us about his fascination with nature and the depth of inspiration it offers.

Elena Fleury-Rojo gives us step-by-step instructions on how to create a reef formation from glass.

And Terry Henry offers an exhaustive analysis of every black glass in COE 104 and 96 that has ever been on the market—a must-have resource for every lampworker.
